As well as work for uni which consists of wallpaper designs and a scuplural project, my brother Nick, who runs a night called ‘funky milk’ has asked me to make a big 3D object, resembling something of a chandelier.

The design of the flyers are hand drawn, and everyone asks whom ever gets them and attends the night to colour them in and personalize them, its with using these flyers that im going to make a 3D object that hangs from the ceiling for the re launch night.. which has been moved from Scubar to Joshua Brooks.

i think i can incorporate this into my Uni work, ,making it part of my first year course.

freelance work like this i think can be important and very useful. also very enjoyable.

Burj Dubai

Burj Dubai

The Architecture in Dubai is pretty ridiculous, and have managed to uphold a reputation and out do themselves with what is going to be the tallest structure in the world.

As i am currently moving into a sculpture project, architecture is a great way of getting inspiration.

CUBE.

My flat mate Charlie told me about volunteering at the gallery Cube (manchester), ive wanted to do something like this for a while but me being lazy never actually went through with it.

i think it will give me a really good insight into work that goes on in a exhibtion space, and will also be a great and easy way to see new exhibitions.

i emailed them today, and they got back to me with Volunteering information, it sounds good.

Here is some information about volunteering at CUBE.

Your role: Information Assistant

As a member of the volunteer team it is your role to maintain a visible presence within the gallery at all times and you will get the opportunity to assist with many aspects of gallery. This begins with the welcoming of visitors on arrival to the gallery and providing them with information about any current and forthcoming exhibitions and events. There will usually be informative material provided on the front desk for you to hand to visitors or source information from if someone asks you any questions. Please do briefly research current exhibitions on the website prior to invigilating. There will also be forms for CUBE membership, questionnaires and mailing list information. We are constantly aiming to increase CUBE membership and are researching our ‘who visits CUBE?’ and require you to generate as much interest in joining the gallery as possible.

Once visitors are inside the gallery, please make sure that you maintain a visible presence. Always be on hand to answer any questions and to assist wherever necessary. In this role it is also essential that you ensure the health safety and security of not only visitors but also the gallery complex and the installations themselves.

You will be based primarily at the front of house desk, although you are also expected to tour the gallery space, both when visitors are present and at hourly intervals to check the facilities. As the gallery’s first point of contact with the general public it is important that you appear presentable and approachable at all times. There is no specific dress code for invigilating, however if you are working with us on a Preview night you will be required to dress more smartly, i.e. all black. More information will be given prior to event.

Shifts

The shifts generally run from 12-3pm and 3-5:30pm Monday to Saturday. During exhibition changeover the shifts will become more flexible and involve different tasks. The Gallery Assistants send out the Rota normally 2 weeks in advance and it is your duty to respond confirming which shifts you will be available for. You are not obligated to work a certain number of shifts in a week/ month but the more you get involved with Cube the more we are able to aid your learning experience in the environment.

Other jobs

Along side being the front of house information point, volunteers also have the opportunity to work on the volunteer laptop to aid the gallery assistants with administration tasks. For health and safety reasons, the laptop shall only be used on the desk space when there are 2 people or more volunteering in the gallery space. When you are not using the laptop, we are happy for you to read a book or do some work so long as you still appear approachable for information from the visitors to the gallery. Some visitors may ask if they can also take photographs in the gallery. This may change depending on the exhibition or the artist’s wishes but unless notified Public are allowed to Photograph but without using flash. You also have the authority to ask them to not take photographs if they do use flash.

There will also be the opportunity for you to get involved with exhibition changeovers and you will be notified of these times and dates in our calendar. Work in this area will include lifting, painting, take down and reinstallation.

If you have any questions at all please feel free to contact us and if you’re interested in volunteering with us just send me an email and I’ll add you to our email list and you will start receiving our Rota plus any other information you might be interested in at CUBE.  On your first shift we will give you a full induction to the space, our current exhibition and your responsibilities.

We look forward to hearing from you.
